X (formerly known as Twitter) is a global social networking platform known for short-form content sharing. Originally launched in 2006, it allows users to post text, images, videos, and interact through likes, messages, voice and video calls, Spaces (live audio), and features like Community Notes, Grok (a chatbot), and job search tools. Posts, once limited to 140 characters, expanded to 280 in 2017 and now have no limit for subscribers. Twitter was acquired by Elon Musk in October 2022 for $44 billion and officially rebranded as X in 2023 under the ownership of X Corp. Following the acquisition, usage policies and moderation approaches shifted significantly, drawing both support and criticism—especially concerning disinformation and hate speech. Musk appointed Linda Yaccarino as CEO in June 2023, while he retained the roles of chairman and CTO. Despite Musk claiming user growth to 600 million by mid-2024, third-party data shows global usage has declined by about 15% since the takeover.
